The HySorb® portfolio offers the right solution for all kinds of diapers

Different diapers require different absorbent cores, and the materials that these diapers are made from are tailored toward the respective application like baby diapers, adult incontinence products and feminine care products.

BASF's superabsorbent polymers (SAP) are engineered to have different primary properties:

  •   Capacity: ensuring the ability to absorb large amounts of fluid
  •   Absorption against pressure: retaining fluid under load
  •   Absorption speed: for fast liquid uptake
  •   Permeability: allowing liquid transfer through a swollen layer of gel

With the right balance of primary properties, HySorb® superabsorbents help to reduce the risk of leakage by effectively absorbing, distributing and retaining urine in the diaper core, even under pressure. This ensures the skin stays dry and healthy.

Accordingly, BASF has a variety of SAP offerings tailored to specific hygiene articles to ensure optimal performance:
From high-fluff to fluff-free diapers, our HySorb® portfolio offers the right solution for all kinds of diapers.

HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF

HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF

We are taking the next step in expanding our sustainable portfolio by offering HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF, the first polyacrylate-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) marketed with a product carbon footprint1 (PCF) of zero for the hygiene industry.

Combination of using renewable energy and renewable raw materials in a biomass balance approach

The zero PCF is achieved by utilizing renewable energy in addition to the established biomass balance approach (BMB) in the production process at the Antwerp Verbund site. HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF is ISCC PLUS-certified.

“According to our customers, the short-term sustainability driver in the hygiene industry is a reduced carbon footprint. With HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF, we offer a solution that will help our customers in the hygiene industry in Europe, Middle East and Africa to achieve their own sustainability targets by enabling them to reduce their scope 3 footprint2. HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF is a drop-in solution, requiring no adaptation of a diaper production line and no compromise on product quality and performance, just like our existing HySorb® B 6610 BMB,” says Maraike Ahlf, Head of Global Marketing & Strategy SAP.

Herewith, we now offer HySorb® B 6610 ZeroPCF as well as HySorb® B 6610 BMB to support our customers’ sustainability transformation.

HySorb® Biomass Balanced

HySorb® Biomass Balanced

HySorb® Biomass Balanced is the our high-performance superabsorbent solution driving the use of renewable feedstock. The certified products thus contribute to sustainable development by saving fossil resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This unique solution enables customers to differentiate their diapers from competition and helps towards achieving their sustainability goals.

From fossil-based raw materials to renewables

The first milestone in developing HySorb® Biomass Balanced has been to identify renewable feedstock like biomethane or bio-naphtha that fit to use in existing production facilities. Bio-naphtha and biomethane can be derived from organic waste or vegetable oils and are used together with fossil resources already in the very first steps of chemical production. The second milestone has been achieved in defining a standard confirmed by an independent certification that relates a targeted share of biomass balanced superabsorbent polymer to a required amount of renewables at the beginning of the value chain (allocation). This standard defines as well specific sustainability requirements for the renewable feedstocks.

In doing so, with HySorb® Biomass Balanced we have created a ready-to-use drop-in solution, requiring no adaptation of a diaper production line with no compromise on product quality and performance. It allows our customers to define their own sustainability targets, saving fossil resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
